Testing Is In Everyone's Best Interest [NASCAR]

Last Sunday (in a race you heard here on Live 105.3), there were a record eleven cautions during the UAW-Dodge 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After experiencing a rough wreck, Jeff Gordon was quoted by NASCAR.com as saying, "I think Texas will be the toughest track we go to with this car, [and] it's already a tough racetrack. And when you look at the transitions, the vertical loads, the bumps and the speeds, it's probably going to be closer to [Las Vegas] than to any other track we go to."
Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage took a proactive stance and offered testing at the Speedway prior to the Samsung 500. NASCAR denied that proactive stance, stating that they will monitor the Texas race and determine if they need additional testing. You would think prior testing in Las Vegas and a record number of cautions would be a big enough clue. Tack on Jeff Gordon, one of the most successful drivers in the history of racing and, to me, there are no more excuses. How is a Wednesday test the week of the race a detriment?
I understand that kinks need to be worked out and that will take time, but we live in an "immediate" society and fans don't want to see right tire after right tire going down. Yellow flag after yellow flag is not what people come to see. I respect NASCAR as an organization, but sometimes you need to listen to your leaders -- especially before someone gets hurt.
Forget about monitoring, NASCAR. Be proactive, make an exception to the rule, and let them test at TMS. |
